Description Formakami JH3 Pendant Light by &Tradition The Formakami JH3 pendant combines traditional construction methods with a modern approach to design. The result is a ‘poetic expression’ of past and present which brings to mind &Tradition’s own company philosophy, placing classical and contemporary designs in the same context to make it clear that good design is timeless. Designer Jaime Hayon was inspired by both Asian and Scandinavian design traditions to create the &Tradition Formakami collection, a series of lamps which resemble a Danish Modernist version of a classical paper lantern—like celebrating Chinese New Year at Arne Jacobsen’s house. Where traditional paper lanterns have typically been used for celebratory purposes, Hayon’s version is itself a celebration of the power and cultural significance of light. ‘Lamps play such an important role in people’s lives,’ he explains. ‘They chase away the darkness by bringing hope.’ Hayon wanted to emphasise this emotional aspect in his design, deciding to cut off the bottom of his lantern to ‘bring even more illumination to people everywhere in the world’ by enabling Formakami to emit both diffused light – like a traditional lantern – and direct downward light.
